Open Question: Where is there good hiking near Washington DC?

I want to go on a hiking/camping trip. I'm looking for somewhere that is less than a two hour drive from DC. I prefer a place where I can follow a trail but also do some wilderness hiking as well. I would like to set up my shelter in the bush, not at a campground. I want to also be near a relatively clean body of water where I can fill up and use chlorine tablets if necessary. I would prefer hiking uphill and having a scenic view at the end of my hike. I want the trip to take between 2-3 days and consist of a somewhat strenuous hike. I would rather there be no wild cats, dogs (wolves), or extremely dangerous spiders in the area. Rabbits nearby are not a necessity but a plus since I would like to set a couple snares. I must be able to build a campfire without park rangers swarming me. Any suggestions?

Signings & Little Flower School

I like to mix and match. It's been a bit of a recurring theme in my life. One of the (many) things I enjoyed about working on TED years ago, was helping to put together an event where, say, one minute you'd have Stefan Sagmeister speaking on happiness and design, followed by Malcolm Gladwell on the pursuit of the perfect spaghetti sauce. Flash forward a handful of years, and I don't do much in the way of events anymore, but when I do, I like for them to be inter-disciplinary, alongside people who love their work or craft. I thought that I'd share pictures from one such event today, and then let you know the details of my upcoming West coast book signings.

Little Flower School

I'm a bit slow getting this together, but last weekend I was fortunate to work (and play!) alongside a whole lot of talent. I've been a fan of Little Flower School for quite some time now. Nicolette and Sarah make stunning arrangements, and I kept hoping I'd be able to take one of their classes in Brooklyn at some point. As fate would have it, they came to California first and we put together a beautiful day of flowers, food, and new friends at June Taylor's Still-Room in Berkeley. Such a nice way to spend a drizzly Sunday.

Little Flower School

I made a few things for lunch - sparkling water spiked with June's syrups, crostini with goat cheese and yellow split peas from SNC, Green Lentil Soup with Curried Brown Butter from the new book. I made super-teensy versions of these, and also whole wheat sables studded with June's candied peel (I'll try to post that recipe soon).

Little Flower School

Now, I know a number of you feel cheated if I don't close out each post with a new recipe, and there is one! It's the lovely little soup pictured above. As I mentioned up above, it's from the new cookbook - but you'll have to hop over and visit the ladies at Remodelista for the recipe, I gave them first dibs on it - Green Lentil Soup with Curried Brown Butter. I think I tapped out the number of recipes I can post from the book, here on the site, with the PDF sampler. ;)

If you're interested in seeing more photos from the event, Remodelista has a more detailed write-up. Here's the Little Flower School post about the class. And Little Flower School on Flickr as well. Another thing worth mentioning - some people don't know that you can visit June's Still-Room & Shop in Berkeley. You absolutely can. It's a beautiful space, and always inspiring. She's open Tuesday - Friday, 11 AM - 4 PM, and on weekend class days as well.

Now, looking forward. I'm over-the-moon excited about doing a handful of book-signings next month - west coast for now. One in San Francisco. One in Berkeley. One in Portland at The Cleaners. And one in Seattle at Spare Room, with the chance of a separate afternoon signing that I'm still working on. I'm teaming up with Kim Boyce in Portland, and Lara Ferroni in Seattle. Can't. Wait. I'm hoping we'll have some other special guests & familiar faces at those signings as well. I'll post reminders as the dates get closer, but this is the jist of it. Can't wait to meet more of you in person. xo

The weird properties of artificially engineered metamaterials are at the core of research into invisibility cloaking, but engineers from Duke University in North Carolina suggest that these materials could also provide a boost to another of technology's quests - wireless power transmission. Hiking the Basque coastline

Basque, Spain
While the Sierra de Toloño offers some amazing trails and views, the most alluring sights I've seen in the Basque region are along its coastline.

The coast of northeast Spain and southwest France along the Bay of Biscay is part of the Basque heartland. Inland villages played a key role in keeping Basque culture alive, but it's the ports--Bilbao, San Sebastian, and many smaller towns--that helped the Basques make their mark on world history.

Today I'm hiking a stretch of Spanish coastline east of San Sebastian and within sight of the French border. Much of my trail today corresponds with the famous Camino de Santiago. This pilgrimage route stretching from France to Galicia on the northwest corner of the Iberian peninsula became popular in the Middle Ages. It's still one of the most popular trails in Europe, with a record 200,000+ hikers last year.

I can see why. Our route takes us past little towns where churches once offered medieval pilgrims spiritual solace, vineyards growing on steep slopes leading down to the sea, and wide views of the water. The coastline here is rugged, with jagged rocks jutting up from the foamy surf and numerous little islands, some topped by churches and homes.

Gadling Gear Review: Brooks-Range Cirro Hoody

The Brooks-Range Cirro Hoody is a great piece of gearI'm the kind of person who really prefers to travel light. In fact, I'm constantly on the lookout for ways that I can shave ounces off my pack weight, while still being able to carry all the items I need for my journey. The trick is to be able to adopt this minimalist approach without compromising on the performance of your gear. That's not always an easy thing to do, which is why I truly appreciate a great piece of travel apparel when I find one. I recently came across just such an item in the form of a new jacket from Brooks-Range, that is a perfect cool weather companion for the traveler who needs versatile and lightweight outdoor gear.

Brooks-Range is not a particularly well known brand with the mainstream, as they tend to focus on a few very high quality products for specific, sometimes niche, markets. Their customers tend to be mountaineers, adventure racers, and long distance trekkers, who have come to appreciate the company's no-nonsense approach to making equipment that offers everything they need, with very few unnecessary frills. The company has earned itself a reputation for having an eye for detail and producing high quality products, which has earned it a loyal following amongst adventure travel junkies.

I was lucky enough to test out the new Cirro Hoody, a very lightweight jacket that is perfect as a stand alone outer layer on spring and fall hikes at altitude, or as an insulating layer under a winter shell in the colder months. When I first pulled on the jacket, I was immediately struck by how warm it was, even though it felt like I really wasn't wearing much of anything at all. The jacket weighs in at a mere 12.4 ounces and it packs down to an incredibly small size, which means it is a great piece of gear to keep in your pack at all times, even when you don't think you'll need it. The Cirro makes for a perfect emergency jacket for those days in the mountains that start with excellent weather, but end with an unexpected storm. It's on one of those days that you'll appreciate the jacket that you forgot you had even put in your backpack.

Roller Coaster Tour attempts to ride every coaster in the U.S.

Karol Gajda is on a solo mission to conquer every roller coaster in the United States - and he's given himself just three months to do it.

Karol's ambitious coast-to-coast roller coaster ride started last Saturday, and he's already faced a few ups and downs. His dream was to travel cross-country in a hearse or similarly quirky car, but he had to settle for a more modest vehicle (although he hasn't yet divulged any details for fear it might break down). He also ripped his shorts at his first stop, Michigan's Adventure. Let's hope he brought more than one pair for the trip!

Why is Karol on this mission? Because he wants to. "It's that simple," he writes on his blog, Roller Coaster Tour, where readers can keep track of his adventures as he circles the States.

Above, Karol talks more about his quest and encourages followers to meet up with him at parks. Luckily, the coaster enthusiast did have the foresight to get cool rock band-style t-shirts with tour dates on the back, which will make him easy to spot at theme parks during the busy summer season.
