Green Pea Soup
I held off writing about this until I was fairly confident it was a sure thing. And now that I'm sitting here amongst towers of boxes, I think it is safe to say...we're moving. Just up the street though! Nothing too dramatic. But yeah, it's a move. And let me tell you, I don't love moving. I've been happy to avoid doing it for seven? eight? years. But the prospect of a proper guest room, a bit more space to work, and extra, extra tall ceilings - all just a hop and skip from where we currently live (and love) - was too much to pass up. So, in addition to wrapping Champagne flutes one by one - and boxing up tights, toothbrushes, and tart pans - cleaning out the freezer was on my hit list. And that's where today's pea soup comes into play.
I wish I could tell you I made today's pea soup with fresh spring peas. I didn't. It was made with peas found in the back left-hand corner of my freezer. And, even so, it was good. I'm sure it would be exponentially good with fresh market peas. Here's how it works. You make an Indian-inspired garlic ginger paste, then use it as the base of the soup along with some onion. There's also some green chiles in there to contribute some kick, along with a couple other spices. The ingredient list is based on one from this book, but I went off-road beyond that, and turned it into a one-pot soup.
There are many things coming with me in the move. And many things that aren't :). I thought I'd share some pics of a few things I've come across that have made the cut. Up top, I love this antique cookie press that I purchased a while back at Heritage in Napa. And below that are some snapshots of my family, and my grandma's copy of The Joy of Cooking.
And Heather, this is a note for you - those little spoons up above were Metne's. It's hard to see, but they all have M, for Metlar, on them. I think they must have been part of her wedding silver? I wonder if mom is hiding the rest of the M's somewhere? And then below those are some H's and a small menagerie of cookie cutters.
I'm looking forward to doing some shooting in the new apartment soon - the light there is stunning - although it will be the first time I'll be shooting from a place where I suspect the morning light will trump late afternoon. Fingers crossed.

The Best Big, Tall Tent Ever!
Imagine this ? 5 friends, a Durango and 9500 miles! A 37-day road trip! These five college kids are challenging themselves with this adventure in order to encourage people to ?Live Out Loud?. Find out more about their journey at www.thedurangodrifters.yolasite.com. Reading about this project made me wonder what kind of tent I would get if it were up to me. I do believe I discovered the ideal one. It?s the absolutely incredible 1 Axis & 3 Zulu 13 person combo family camping tent. This cool modular tent system is made up of a center section and 3 attachable pod tents. The middle tent is a free standing screen house that provides a huge living area. It is an amazing 24 feet long, 10 feet wide and ? get ready for it ? 9 feet tall. I love tall tents! This space is so big that you could even play Twister in it. Each of the three pods is a separate free standing 3 person tent that can be attached to the main tent or not depending on your needs. I think that, even though these kids are best friends, the importance of the sense of privacy that the pods offer will be paramount as the trip progresses. Picture this ? it?s been a long day on the road, you?ve just pull into the perfect spot at the Park, you assemble the tent(s), fire up the camp stove, have a great dinner and, as dusk approaches and the mosquitoes emerge, you can all pile in to the bug free zone of the screen house and relax, laughing, telling stories and sharing hopes and dreams of the future. Then imagine snuggling into your sleeping bag and drifting off to sleep while nature sings you a soft lullaby. Heaven ? it sure doesn?t get any better than this! Cord cutting -- the practice of ditching traditional pay TV (i.e. cable, fiber and satellite) in favor of getting programming from lower cost and free sources -- has been getting a fair bit of attention of late. For example, we talked about some of the alternatives in this post. That said, the popularity of this trend is the subject of some debate, and often conflicting research. A recent report by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) that downplays the cord-cutting phenomenon is one example of that. However, another take-away from the CEA's research has touched off a bit of a firestorm in some quarters. Quoting the findings, CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro tells Multichannel News that while free, over-the-air (OTA) TV was once essential, "using huge swaths of wireless spectrum to deliver TV to homes no longer makes economic sense."

im going camping next week and this is my family's first time. its summer so im pretty sure it will be nice out but i don't know with this weather. we are going to be sleeping in a camper so we don't need to worry about the tents. i think we would only stay for 1 or 2 days im not sure. but what should i pack? and if it rains what im pretty sure it will what should i bring? thanks!
