Black Sesame Otsu

I have a couple of things for you today. A new recipe. And a related teaser for something to come later in the week - a sampler PDF of six recipes & photos from Super Natural Every Day. The sampler includes some of my favorite recipes from the book, and I'm excited to be able to get some of the recipes into your hands. Finally!

Black Sesame Otsu Recipe

Take a peek above to get a sense of what the sampler is going to include. I'm including the recipe for Black Sesame Otsu in this post, down below. For those of you who liked the otsu recipe I included in my last book, I did this new version with a twist. I still use soba noodles and tofu, but everything gets slathered in a thinned-out, salty-sweet black sesame paste, and then topped with lots of sliced green onions. As a side note, the black sesame paste is pretty great on all sorts of other things as well - salads, spinach, roasted potatoes, green beans. Go to town with it.

Huge thanks to each of you who've pre-ordered the new book. I mean it, I feel fortunate to be able to work on projects like this. Ten Speed made a real effort to keep the price point reasonable, so the book is accessible to many. It is $13 on Amazon, and there are a list of alternate retailers on this page as well.

Black Sesame Otsu Recipe

One last late-breaking, book-related note. It looks like Super Natural Every Day is going to be published in the UK & Australia simultaneously with the US version. More news to come when I know more!

Super Natural Every Day: Six Recipe Sampler

Hi all, I feel like today is a big day for me. As promised, I'm over-the-moon excited to share a handful of recipes from Super Natural Every Day with you. It feels like it has been a long time coming! You can download the recipe sampler PDF here. The file is quite small, just 2MB. It is twenty pages in length, and includes six of my favorite recipes from the new book. It also includes a number of photo out takes that didn't make it into the final book. In short, a little teaser of the book to come.

Super Natural Every Day Recipe Sampler

I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, the book chapters are organized: breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, drinks, treats. Structured in the way a typical day might unfold for me. The recipes are all written in cups / oz / grams. Which I hope will be helpful for those of you who are cooking from it who aren't from the U.S. And, as you can see in that graphic up above, the sampler includes recipes for Millet Muffins (thank you Jess, my nephew loves these), Ravioli Salad, Avocado & Mustard Seeds (a terrific way to use avocados that isn't guacamole), Black Sesame Otsu, Tinto de Verano, and a Tutti-Frutti Crumble (I put beaujolais & poppy seeds in this).

I'll leave it at that for now, and simply say, I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I do. Thank you all for your ongoing support, excitement, and encouragement. And(!) thank you Toni for making me a pretty PDF for me to share :) -h

For those of you who have missed the last couple of book-related posts, Super Natural Every Day is available for pre-order on Amazon for $13. There is a list of alternate retailers on this page, and on the final pages of the recipe sample PDF as well.

Open Question: Buying tall tents or tipis online?

I'm going to soul survivor and want to get a tent for me and my friend to share. I'd like one that's quite or fairly high but looking around has been really hard to find one. I was thinking a tipi or something similar but any suggestions are welcome. I wouldn't mind a three or four berth one as some extra room would be handy! Thanks =DD

Coffee Joulies - just the way Goldilocks likes it

Coffee Joulies incorporate a phase change material to quickly cool your hot coffee to the ...

Unless you’re someone who drinks their coffee fast, you likely face a bit of a conundrum when it comes to temperature – either you start with it at the perfect temperature but end up with it getting too cold, or you end up with it cooling down to the perfect temperature by starting with it too hot. Two young entrepreneurs, however, have created a product that they claim quickly cools your hot coffee to the right temperature, but then holds it at that temperature twice as long as it would stay there otherwise. Their product is called Coffee Joulies... Continue Reading Coffee Joulies - just the way Goldilocks likes it

It?s A Tent ? No, It?s A Bed ? No, It?s A Playpen ? What?

I?m thinking that this is another case of ?necessity is the mother of invention?. Whoever thought of this obviously had a small child and spent family time at the beach, in the park or camping! The LittleLife Arc 3 Travel Cot is a perfect solution for traveling and spending time outdoors with your young child. It?s very sturdy and is a breeze to set up. Because of all the mesh panels it doesn?t get hot and stuffy and the soft foam mattress, with it?s removable and washable cover, is extremely comfortable. It offers a measure of shade so it?s terrific for when your child needs to nap while you?re spending a relaxing afternoon at the beach. If you throw a towel on top your little one will be totally shaded and, because of the airiness the mesh provides, it will stay cool inside. And, as it gets later in the afternoon and the mosquitoes come out, this travel cot can be used as a bug free playpen. You may even decide to set it up as a bed inside your large family tent when you go camping because, I believe you?ll find that the LittleLife Arc 3 Travel Cot will quickly become a favorite safe and cozy haven for you?re toddler to enjoy.  You know, the more I think about this handy little cot, the more uses I can imagine for it. For instance, say you?re at your older kids soccer/football/baseball game, just put some favorite toys in with your young one and ? voila ? everybody?s happy, safe and secure. Or, maybe you?re holidaying in Mexico or Hawaii or Greece (lucky you). This travel cot is so light and easy to carry it would be perfect to bring along for those lazy days on those sun drenched beaches. You may even find that you?re setting it up in the playroom at home so the kids can use it as a fort! All in all, I bet this versatile little cot will become one of your favorite accessories (if you have a small kid that is). Come have a look.

Video road test: The Zero S electric supermotard

The Zero S electric motorcycle

The latest in our series of video road tests is America's leading electric motorcycle: the Zero S, from California's Zero Motorcycles. Seventy-five miles per hour and 60 miles between charges are the big numbers here – but how does that translate to real life use? Also, since electricity costs so much less than petrol, can an electric motorcycle be viewed as an economical option? And what about the environment? When the carbon cost of electricity generation is taken into account, how green are electric vehicles? These questions and more, answered after the jump!.. The good, the bad, the ugly: New infomercial gadgets

If there's one product category that we love covering at ConsumerSearch, it's As Seen On TV products. Here at the International Home and Housewares Show, we've found plenty of new and existing ASOTV products, some that seem legitimate and promising, others that probably are better left on the drawing board. We'll be posting new single-product reviews of some of these As Seen On TV goods in the coming months, but in the meantime, here is a rundown of just a few of the crazy gadgets and gizmos we've seen in Chicago.

Man who was stranded at Lucky Peak gets his canoe back

Kris Keller was super bummed out last Wednesday when someone snatched his canoe off a bank of Lucky Peak Reservoir and stranded him and his three dogs near Chimney Rock. The 34-year-old and his pooches eventually found help after starting a signal fire to get the attention of someone near Spring Shores Marina. His travails made all the local media.

Signings & Little Flower School

I like to mix and match. It's been a bit of a recurring theme in my life. One of the (many) things I enjoyed about working on TED years ago, was helping to put together an event where, say, one minute you'd have Stefan Sagmeister speaking on happiness and design, followed by Malcolm Gladwell on the pursuit of the perfect spaghetti sauce. Flash forward a handful of years, and I don't do much in the way of events anymore, but when I do, I like for them to be inter-disciplinary, alongside people who love their work or craft. I thought that I'd share pictures from one such event today, and then let you know the details of my upcoming West coast book signings.

Little Flower School

I'm a bit slow getting this together, but last weekend I was fortunate to work (and play!) alongside a whole lot of talent. I've been a fan of Little Flower School for quite some time now. Nicolette and Sarah make stunning arrangements, and I kept hoping I'd be able to take one of their classes in Brooklyn at some point. As fate would have it, they came to California first and we put together a beautiful day of flowers, food, and new friends at June Taylor's Still-Room in Berkeley. Such a nice way to spend a drizzly Sunday.

Little Flower School

I made a few things for lunch - sparkling water spiked with June's syrups, crostini with goat cheese and yellow split peas from SNC, Green Lentil Soup with Curried Brown Butter from the new book. I made super-teensy versions of these, and also whole wheat sables studded with June's candied peel (I'll try to post that recipe soon).

Little Flower School

Now, I know a number of you feel cheated if I don't close out each post with a new recipe, and there is one! It's the lovely little soup pictured above. As I mentioned up above, it's from the new cookbook - but you'll have to hop over and visit the ladies at Remodelista for the recipe, I gave them first dibs on it - Green Lentil Soup with Curried Brown Butter. I think I tapped out the number of recipes I can post from the book, here on the site, with the PDF sampler. ;)

If you're interested in seeing more photos from the event, Remodelista has a more detailed write-up. Here's the Little Flower School post about the class. And Little Flower School on Flickr as well. Another thing worth mentioning - some people don't know that you can visit June's Still-Room & Shop in Berkeley. You absolutely can. It's a beautiful space, and always inspiring. She's open Tuesday - Friday, 11 AM - 4 PM, and on weekend class days as well.

Now, looking forward. I'm over-the-moon excited about doing a handful of book-signings next month - west coast for now. One in San Francisco. One in Berkeley. One in Portland at The Cleaners. And one in Seattle at Spare Room, with the chance of a separate afternoon signing that I'm still working on. I'm teaming up with Kim Boyce in Portland, and Lara Ferroni in Seattle. Can't. Wait. I'm hoping we'll have some other special guests & familiar faces at those signings as well. I'll post reminders as the dates get closer, but this is the jist of it. Can't wait to meet more of you in person. xo
